This week was old-fashioned.

This week in Science we learned about fossils. Fossils are animal bones from millions of years ago. When the animals died, their bodies were covered in mud, and when the mud hardened, the bones stayed in the mud for millions of years! We also learned that tree sap would attract a bug and the bug would harden and the bug would get stuck and be trapped forever! We did learn about extinction and how people are making animals disappear. By the year 2100, scientists estimate that half of our animals will be extinct!

This week in Math, we did reviews for the Geometry Test we had on Friday. We reviewed using a protractor to determine what the angle is in degrees, like 48 degrees. We also reviewed complementary and supplementary angles, angles on one side of a straight line, angles around a point, and quadrilaterals! In addition, we reviewed the different types of triangles and polygons. Yeah, we couldn’t believe it either, but we stuck to it and did AWESOME!

Now on to Language Arts! This will be interesting. We reviewed text types and transfer words, but let’s start off with text types. Text types are the kinds of texts that something is written in. Say you have sequence, that’s when the writing goes in order. They have words like first, second, then, and lastly. There is also compare/contrast. That is when you have two places, people or things. Then you see what or how they are alike or different. There are a lot more, but there are two for now. Those are text types. Now, on to transfer words. Transfer words are words like therefore, although, and because. For example, I am a good student, therefore I should be your class president, or Because you are right I’ll go with your plan, and lastly, Although you are short we need you to play. Was that not interesting?

This week in Social Studies we got new parts for our last reader’s theater. They’re about the Revolutionary War. Also this week we watched Liberty’s Kids. The episodes were also about the Revolutionary War. The second one was about the non-British mailing system. Another thing we did this week was learn about the Continental Leaders/Army. The army was very small and week. They had been farmers, store keepers, and even shoemakers, but now they were soldiers. The British Army was large and powerful.

This week we took a field trip to the HenryFordMuseum! It was really cool. There was so much to see, we didn’t even get to see it all. But what we did see was awesome! We saw really cool old cars. We saw trains that you could get on and pretend you were the conductor, and really big airplanes hanging from the ceiling. There were other cool things too, like they had the Rosa Parks bus where Rosa Parks tells her story. You get to sit on the bus and wherever Rosa Parks sat, a light will glow the brightest! There was also this giant hot dog called the weinermobile. There were also gift shops all around the museum! But it was very expensive! There was also a Titanic exhibit, but is cost money to go in so we couldn’t go. Everyone enjoyed the museum. It was the best field trip ever.

This week was historical.

This week raced by.

This week in Language Arts we finished writing our final draft of Our Special Place writing. Our final drafts are for the office to see how we improved in writing. We also learned about Question/Answer text. A Question/Answer text is when there is a question, and it’s answered. For the rest of the week, we tried to figure out which kind it is. We also learned about linking words. You use these to link two ideas. An example is: I like cookies. My favorite is chocolate chip. We can combine those two sentences with especially. I like cookies, especially chocolate chip. Also this week we did Working with Words.

This week in Science we learned about family traits and heredity. Family traits are just traits you get from your parents. This is also known as heredity. Traits are the things passed down from parent to child, like blue eyes or brown hair. These are passed down through DNA. DNA is stuff inside genes. Genes are held within chromosomes. There are also things called dominate and recessive traits. The dominate trait is the one that comes through.

This week in Social Studies we talked about Paul Revere and his midnight ride through Lexington and Concord. When British troops started marching toward Concord and Lexington, Paul Revere rode all over on horse back to warm people. We also learned about the writing of the Declaration of Independence.

This week in Math we learned about congruence. Congruence is when you have a shape that is the same size and shape. Say you have a triangle. For it to be congruent, it has to be both the same size and shape. That’s congruence. We also learned about transformation. A transformation is a flip, turn, or slide. For example, if you have a shape at the left then if it slides over to the right, it’s a slide. That’s what transformations are. Next, we learned about circles. We learned that circles are 360 degrees. So, to find the missing angle in a circle, you add up the angles you know and then subtract from 360. For example, if you have 260 degrees and 60 degrees that equals 320 degrees. When you subtract that from 360, you get 40 degrees!

This week we went to Michigan International Speedway (MIS). It was really fun. We got to ride around the track in a tram and at one point we stopped and they made everyone get out and try to run up the track. Because we were at one of the turns, it was really hard to run up. I felt like I was running but not going anywhere. We also got to see a bunch of race and regular cars race. We also went hiking and got some samples of invasive species. We taped these to booklets. Also, we tested pond and tap water to see if fish could live in them, which they can.

We also went to the Middle School for a visit. Mr. Durban talked to us and then we took a quick tour through the building.

That’s why this week went by as fast as a race car.

May 14-18, 2012

This week was genuine!

In Language Arts, we learned about pronouns. Do you know what pronouns are? Well, pronouns are a word that you can use instead of a noun. Like: Kristy is going to get a new kitten tonight. Kristy got a black and white one and named it Ruby. You can change the Kristy in the second line to she. Also we learned about sequence. Sequence is when you read a book and put the evidence in order to show what happened first to last. In addition, we learned about description. Let’s say you are reading about whales, and it said what color they were or how big they were. That would be description. Cause and effect is another thing we learned about. It is where something makes something else happen. We also learned about problem/ solution. That is where you have a problem and you find a solution.

This week in Math, we learned about triangles. There are six kinds of triangles. One kind is a right triangle. Right triangles are triangles that have a 90 degree angle in it. Another kind is an obtuse triangle. Obtuse triangles are a triangle with an obtuse angle. Also, there’s an acute angle. An acute triangle is a triangle with all acute angles. Equilateral triangles are another triangle. An equilateral triangle is a triangle with all equal sides. Another is isosceles. An isosceles triangle has two equal sides, but one unequal side. The last one is a scalene triangle. That’s a triangle with all different sides. Tuesday we learned how to find the missing angle in a triangle. A triangle always adds up to 180 degrees. So, if we have the angles 58 degrees and 112 degrees, we add the two together. That would be 170 degrees. Now we subtract 180-170. That’s ten degrees. So, our missing angle is 10 degrees. Wednesday we learned about quadrilaterals. There are many kinds. There’s a parallelogram. A parallelogram is a shape that has two pairs of parallel lines. Another is a rectangle. I think everyone knows what a rectangle is. A rhombus is another one. A rhombus has two sets of parallel lines and all the sides are the same length. A square is another one. The last one is the trapezoid. A trapezoid is a shape with one pair of parallel lines. We also learned how to find a missing angle in a quadrilateral. It’s the same as a triangle, but the angles all add up to 360 degrees. For Fraction Friday, we did multiplying mixed numbers. That’s all we did in Math!

This week in Social Studies, we started our Patriot/Loyalist Wheel. It’s where you read biographies about colonists, and you decide if that person is a Patriot or a Loyalist. You had to find 12 of each. Since we finished Chapter 11, we took an Assessment. It was super easy. A lot of us got 100%, but some of us didn’t do so well. We also wrote two letters. One was to a Patriot and one was to a Loyalist. We had to explain if we agreed with them or not and why. That’s all we did in Social Studies!

That’s why this week was Spring-tastic!

This week was jog-tastic!

In Language Arts we have finished our Special Place writing and we are revising and partner editing it. Our current WWW Words are television, supervision, subtraction, retraction, and fraction. Since we are done with our partner reads, we are reading poems and finding the patterns. We finished our book The Whipping Boy and took the AR quiz, the Vocabulary Test and the Literacy Skills Test. On Friday we watched the movie and then compared it to the book. There were lots of ways the movie was the same as the book, and lots of ways that they were different.

In Math we found out how to use a protractor. There’s a hole where you line it up with the vertex on an angle to find out the degrees. We also learned new types of angles. An obtuse angle is more than 90 degrees, and an acute angle is less than 90 degrees, but a right angle is exactly 90 degrees. But don’t forget the straight angle—that’s 180 degrees. Do you know what polygons are? Well, polygons are a shape that has all straight sides, never round, and the sides have to form a closed shape. Here are some examples: triangles have 3 sides, quadrilaterals have 4 sides. Then on Fraction Friday we multiplied fractions by fractions. First you have two fractions 1/3 x 2/4 which you would multiply across 1 x 2 = 2 and 3 x 4 = 12. So you get 2/12 and then you reduce it to 1/6.

This week in Social Studies, we learned about Patriots and Loyalists. A Patriot was someone who wanted the colonies to separate from Great Britain. Loyalists were people who wanted Great Britain to rule us. We read about 3 Loyalists. Then we did a sheet about them. We had to list their name, occupation, the action taken, and what they did. Then we read about 3 Patriots. We then answered the same questions about them. Also, we did a worksheet on John Adams. Adams was the famous lawyer for the Boston Massacre incident. We also did a paper on Samuel Adams. He was a Patriot. Samuel was the leader of the Boston Tea Party.

On Thursday we had the Jog-a-thon. It was awesome! First the fifth grade cheered on the kindergarteners and the first graders while we had our treat. Then we did the obstacle course. Finally, we did the jog.

We had a great week!

April 30-May 4, 2012

This week was musical!

This week in Language Arts we did our 4th and 5th paragraphs for Our Special Place story. The 4th paragraph is the 3rd reason we like our special place. The 5th paragraph is the closing paragraph which gives our summary that puts everything together. We are also close to finishing up The Whipping Boy. We are on Chapter 19. They are at a carnival right now eating potatoes with salt and pepper. We also did Making Words for our new Word Wall Words which are the following: television, supervision, subtraction, retraction, and tractor.

Have you ever heard of the Boston Tea Party? That is what we learned about in Social Studies this week. The Boston Tea Party was not a tea party where you drink tea. The colonists were mad because of the Intolerable Acts and one of these acts was the Tea Act. They had to pay taxes on their tea. So the colonists threw tea overboard on the ships. That is the Boston Tea Party! Now, on to King George III. There were three King Georges, but I am going to talk about the 3rd King George. He was nasty, rude, mean, soulless, and cruel. We also did Assessment 10. Then we made a coat of arms on our laptops.

This week in Math we had a geometry pretest, and we learned a little about geometry. We learned about points, which mark the location. Lines are points that go on forever. A line segment is a line with a definite ending point. A mid point is the spot in the middle of a line or line segment. Finally, we learned about rays which go on forever in one direction and have a definite ending position in the other.

On Friday we had Student of the Month. April’s goal was honesty. The person in our class who got it was Amelia!

On Monday we went to the symphony at AdrianCollege. It was really cool! They had the flute, clarinet, oboe, piccolo, harp, snare drum, and bass drum, just to name a few.

This week was as hot as the sun!
